Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the specialized branch of medicine focused on the health, diagnosis, and non-surgical management of disorders affecting the digestive system. This field covers the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), rectum, as well as the accessory digestive organs: the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

Common Conditions Treated
Gastroenterologists manage a diverse array of acute and chronic digestive issues, including:
  • Acid Reflux & GERD: Chronic heartburn that can damage the esophageal lining.
  • Peptic Ulcer Disease: Sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or small intestine.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): A common functional disorder causing bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation.
  • Liver Diseases: Conditions like hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis.
  • Celiac Disease: An autoimmune reaction to consuming gluten that damages the small intestine.
Essential Procedures and Diagnostic Tools
To visualize and evaluate the digestive tract, gastroenterologists perform minimally invasive endoscopic procedures. An Upper Endoscopy (EGD) uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. A Colonoscopy allows doctors to view the entire large intestine to screen for colorectal cancer and remove precancerous polyps. They also utilize abdominal ultrasounds, CT scans, and specialized breath or stool tests to diagnose digestive malfunctions.
Gastroenterology vs. GI Surgery
Gastroenterologists focus primarily on medical treatments, dietary modifications, lifestyle interventions, and endoscopic therapies. However, if a condition requires structural alteration—such as removing a cancerous tumor, treating a severe bowel obstruction, or performing a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)—the patient is referred to a general or gastrointestinal surgeon.
